Gwen Medallion, quilt for lap or wall by Edi's Quilts
A Medallion quilt has a central block and a series of borders around it, eight in this case. To explain the name, Gwen taught the class. The central block is a vase of flowers, the flowers having been fussy-cut from a print fabric. The final border is a plaid-type in saturated shades of aqua, purple, rose and gold. The other fabrics were all chosen to coordinate with these two. The eight borders vary from less than an inch to five inches, from a plain band to a complicated patchwork block. Two flowers are quilted into the background beside the vase. Other quilting unobtrusively follows the lines of the patchwork.
The quilt is 57.5” by 62” a rectangle not far from being a square. The back has interest in itself: a row of ‘wild geese’ triangles travel up the center with a large block of the two feature fabrics on each side and smaller blocks of other fabrics from the pattern filling in the corners. The batting is a very stable 80/20 cotton/poly blend. Washable on delicate cycle, tumble dry.
This quilt would be great to curl up with in your easy chair, or drape over the sofa for a color accent, or to keep in the car as a travel blanket. An unobtrusive hanging sleeve is attached to the back for easy mounting on a wall, and it can also become a table topper.
