Painter • Printmaker • Architect
Randolph paints in watercolors, gouache and acrylics. She often combines these media with drawing to express the essence of the form. Her paintings are influenced by the practice of Japanese and Chinese brush painting and calligraphy as seen in her expressive brushworks. She is a colorist whose love of nature and gardens is reflected in the use of heightened color for achieving tonal harmony. Her practice as an architect can be seen in the spatial organization of her paintings and prints.
Randy continues her artistic career as a printmaker. Her intaglio prints and monotype paintings translate nature and the power of the landscape through their seductive beauty and clarity. The art works created on Lopez express the loci of this special place, mirroring the uniqueness of the San Juan Islands.
Intaglio solarplate prints complement her free-style paintings and monotypes in their clear imagery depicting classical and nautical subjects. Intaglio is a printmaking technique in which the image is incised into a plate. Normally, copper or zinc plates are used and the incisions are created by etching, engraving, drypoint, aquatint or mezzotint. Randy's prints are from light sensitive polymer plates, commonly called solarplates.
Once the plate is processed, creativity begins again. To enhance individual prints, she often hand paints or embellishes them by the addition of Chine collé or color inks during the printing process. These photogravure prints are more expressive than the original image due to the imprint of a "hand." Each edition is limited in number and is printed in the original plate size.
